How can our grants be used?

Breakfast Grants can be used in many ways, including the following:

  • To test a pilot school breakfast program during the 2016-2017 school year
  • To try Breakfast in The Classroom or Grab and Go Breakfast models in some or all classes in a school
  • To purchase items and equipment needed to expand or improve your school breakfast models

Grants will support schools with the purchase of approved equipment, materials and initiatives facilitating alternative breakfast delivery models (such as in-classroom breakfast, grab-n-go, or second-chance breakfast) in an effort to increase student participation in universal school breakfast.

The School Breakfast Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, plays a crucial role in making sure kids get the food they need to focus and excel in the classroom. Barriers, including stigma and transportation logistics, cause school breakfast participation rates to be low. There are creative, low-cost ways to increase school breakfast participation. The New Orleans No Kid Hungry campaign is working with teachers, principals, school food service directors, parents and students to implement new way to serve breakfast such as offering Breakfast in the Classroom or Grab N’ Go options that make breakfast a part of every students morning schedule.

CACFP Grants can be used in many ways, including the following:

  • Costs associated with starting or growing a CACFP after school program
  • Staffing, Equipment, Program costs
  • Outreach to increase enrollment
  • Support to offset registration or other enrollment fees for low income families
  • Transportation

This grant opportunity is for funding from Share Our Strength and the No Kid Hungry - New Orleans campaign to help after school programs expand access to and participation in after school meal programs that receive reimbursement through the USDA’s Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
