Breakfast Challenge

New Orleans No Kid Hungry School Breakfast Challenge

No Kid Hungry New Orleans is hosting a School Breakfast Challenge to encourage schools to increase their breakfast participation. We want to ensure that students have a healthy start to their school day. A nationwide survey of K-8 teachers and principals finds that nine out of ten teachers agree that breakfast is extremely or very important for academic achievement. Despite this shared value, only 68% of students in New Orleans who get a free or reduced-price school lunch are also getting a school breakfast. If we increased this citywide number to 70% for elementary and middle school children students, we could see more than 1,300 additional days of school attended per year, 900 more students scoring higher on math tests and 226 more graduates from high school.  We're awarding great prizes to selected schools who significantly increase their breakfast participation!

This contest runs from March 1 – 31, 2015 and encourages schools to increase school breakfast program participation by at least 20% through rethinking how breakfast is served.  In order to participate in the School Breakfast Challenge, your school should already be offering an alternative school breakfast model, i.e. Breakfast in the Classroom, Grab and Go Breakfast, or Second Chance Breakfast.

The School Breakfast Challenge will also include a drawing/coloring contest for students (Grades K-8) and an Instagram contest for students (Grades 9-12). Walmart gift cards will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  We can help you identify which service models are best for your school and how to best implement a successful breakfast program.
